Atlanta Hawks History

The lineage of the Hawks dates to 1946, when the Tri-Cities Blackhawks played in the NBA's forerunner, the National Basketball League. They moved to Milwaukee in 1951, shortening their name, and then to St. Louis in 1955. They made the NBA finals four times in a five-year stretch, defeating the Boston Celtics to capture the franchise's only title in 1958.

After moving to Atlanta in 1968, the Hawks' postseason runs continued for five years, fueled by the likes of Pete Maravich, Lou Hudson and Walt Bellamy. In 1976, Ted Turner bought the team and installed Hubie Brown as coach, and by his second season, the team was again a playoff contender. The Dominique Wilkins era began in 1982, with "The Human Highlight Film" leading the team to four straight 50-win seasons beginning with the 1985–86 season.

The arrival of Dikembe Mutombo helped the Hawks continue to make postseason runs in the late 1990s, and the team notched 10 consecutive playoff berths starting in the 2007–08 season. During the 2021–22 regular season, All-Star point guard Trae Young led all of the NBA in total points (2,155) and total assists (737). During the postseason, the Atlanta Hawks went on an incredible playoff run, led by Young, that saw them advance to the Eastern Conference Finals where they lost to eventual NBA Champions Milwaukee Bucks.

  • Great Game...need more home team support

by TruGates on 10/8/09Philips Arena - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

The game was awesome. I loved my seats and the promotional discount. I would love to see more promos like this, but I will still purchase tickets to the home games. We need more home team support.

  • Great Seats-Lower Level

    by ATLHawk24 on 10/8/09Philips Arena - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Although it was only a pre-season game, we treated it like a regular season game. Great seats, lots of enthusiastic fans and best of all, only paid $3.50 for them through a special event from the Hawks.

  • The Hawks game was awesome!!

Glad to see that the Hawks dominated a known team like the Hornets and didn't let Chris Paul run circles around them!!

  • Hawks looked strong

    by hawks50 on 10/8/09Philips Arena - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

The team looked strong with depth at the guard position. Unfortunately, Joe Smith didn't play so I'm still suspicious of the big man play

  • The Hawks are Going to Be a Great Team!

by bibbyandpejafan on 10/8/09Philips Arena - AtlantaRating: 3 out of 5

The exhibition game between the Hawks and the Hornets was a fun evening. It was exciting to see the new team members on both teams. Being a pre-season game it was interesting to watch the different combinations of players that the coaches put on the floor. When the starters when in the game, the Hawks were crushing the Hornets. When the second and third string was on the court, they allowed the Hornets to gain momentum and a lot of points. The Hawks did up winning in the end, but not by much. I do think we are going to have a GREAT team this year! Teague and Crawford are wonderful new additions. Teague has to learn that he is not the only player on the court though. He will learn that soon. Overall, it was a fun evening!

  • Hawks are looking great.

    by MD4L on 10/8/09Philips Arena - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

Well, it's the beginning of a new season. The starters look great and if we can stay healthy we should be in the playoffs for the third straight year. The bench played a lot last night and once they get together it could be a real good season. One thing I wish could happen is that when the game is in play the ushers would stop people from getting up to leave out or coming in. I dislike moving cause someone wants to get out or in while the game is going on.

  • Hawks defeat Hornets in preseason action.

by basketballjones on 10/8/09Philips Arena - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

A lot of people ask, "why go to a preseason game? hardly anyone goes..?" And to me, that is the reason to go! If you plan on attending games throughout the season, then attending a preseason game is ideal. Not only does it give you the chance to see some basketball, but it does so without the hassle of massive concession lines, parking issues, etc. It is a great opportunity to get familar with the layout of Philips Arena, and surrounding restaurants, clubs, and other activities. This is not my first preseason game, nor will it be my last- and i would say to all of those preseason skeptics, attend one! What's the worst you lose-$10?

  • Close game

by colormel on 10/8/09Philips Arena - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

I loved the game. I took my nephew and he enjoyed the game too. I was very appreciative of the tickets. I had no idea that the tickets would be so close given that they were complementary.

We had a great time. My daughter and I went and took some friends. They loved it. We had two little girls 4 and 2 that have never seen or been anywhere like it and they had the best time ever. They have had a rough life and now beginning to see that there is so much in life and Atlanta Hawks Rock!
